End-of-Life Doula Care in Port Townsend, Washington

End-of-life doula care offers compassionate, non-medical support for individuals and families navigating dying, death, and the many decisions and emotions that can accompany this profound time of life.

At Lilac & Fig Integrative Healing Studio, I provide end-of-life and death doula support in Port Townsend and throughout Jefferson County, Washington. My role is to walk alongside you and your family—offering presence, practical guidance, education, planning, ritual, and emotional and spiritual support while honoring your individual wishes, beliefs, and values.

You do not have to know exactly what you need before reaching out.

Sometimes the first step is simply having someone to talk with who is comfortable talking about death.

What Is an End-of-Life Doula?

An end-of-life doula, sometimes called a death doula, provides non-medical support before, during, and after death.

Just as a birth doula helps individuals and families navigate the transition into life, an end-of-life doula supports individuals and their loved ones through the transition of dying and death.

My role does not replace hospice, physicians, nurses, funeral professionals, therapists, or clergy. Instead, end-of-life doula care can complement the support those professionals provide while offering additional time, presence, education, and individualized attention.

Sometimes that means helping someone explore what matters most to them as they approach the end of life.

Sometimes it means sitting quietly at the bedside.

Sometimes it means helping a family understand what to expect, creating meaningful ritual, documenting someone's stories, or simply being a calm and steady presence when everything feels unfamiliar.

You Don't Have to Be Dying to Work With an End-of-Life Doula

End-of-life planning does not have to begin during a crisis.

In fact, some of the most meaningful conversations about death happen long before death is expected.

You may want support exploring your end-of-life wishes, talking with family members about death, considering what you want your final days to look like, documenting your preferences, or creating a plan that reflects who you are and what matters to you.

Planning ahead can create space for thoughtful choices and meaningful conversations while you are able to approach them with time and intention.

You do not need a terminal diagnosis to begin.

You only need a willingness to have the conversation.

End-of-Life Planning & Family Guidance

When someone you love is dying, there can suddenly be an overwhelming amount to understand.

Families may find themselves navigating medical information, caregiving responsibilities, changing family roles, practical decisions, anticipatory grief, and questions they never expected to have to answer.

End-of-life doula support can provide a steady point of connection through that experience.

Depending on your family's needs, support may include:

  • End-of-life planning and education

  • Exploring and documenting final wishes

  • Family conversations and guidance

  • Preparing for what to expect as death approaches

  • Bedside presence and companionship

  • Sacred vigil planning and support

  • Legacy projects and life review

  • Ritual and ceremony

  • Spiritual and emotional support

  • Home funeral planning and education

  • Support surrounding Death with Dignity

  • Grief and bereavement support

  • Guidance connecting with additional community resources

Every individual and every family is different. Care is shaped around what feels meaningful and supportive to you.

Bedside Presence & Sacred Vigil

There is something deeply human about simply being present with someone who is dying.

For some families, bedside vigil is quiet—soft music, familiar voices, favorite blankets, dim lighting, and the presence of people they love.

For others, it may include prayer, readings, storytelling, music, ritual, spiritual practices, or moments of celebration and remembrance.

And sometimes there is simply silence.

As an end-of-life doula, I can help families prepare for and create a bedside environment that reflects the wishes, personality, spirituality, and values of the person who is dying.

I can also provide presence when family members need to sleep, eat, shower, step outside, or simply have a moment to themselves.

No one should feel that loving someone means they must remain at the bedside every minute.

Legacy Work & Life Review

Legacy is about more than what we leave behind.

It is also about recognizing the life that has already been lived.

Legacy work can take many forms: recording stories, writing letters, creating memory books, gathering photographs, documenting family history, preparing messages for future milestones, creating keepsakes, or simply spending time remembering the people, places, experiences, and relationships that shaped a life.

There is no right way to create a legacy.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another person is simply the opportunity to tell their story and know that someone is listening.

Spiritual Support at End of Life

Questions about meaning, spirituality, what happens after death, and what we believe often become more present as death approaches.

You do not need to follow a particular religion or spiritual path to receive support at Lilac & Fig.

As an end-of-life doula, my role is not to tell you what to believe. It is to honor what you believe—or the uncertainty you may hold.

There is room for faith here.

There is room for spirituality.

There is room for questions.

And there is room for not knowing.

When desired, Reiki, energy work, meditation, ritual, music, readings, or other spiritual practices may also be incorporated into end-of-life care.

Home Funeral Planning & After-Death Care

Some families want to remain involved in caring for their loved one after death.

A home funeral can allow family and friends additional time to gather, sit vigil, participate in after-death care, create ceremony, and say goodbye in a familiar environment before burial or cremation.

For families considering this option, I offer home funeral planning and education to help you understand what may be involved, prepare ahead of time, identify additional resources, and create a plan that reflects your family's wishes.

Home funeral planning can begin long before someone is actively dying. You may simply want to understand your options and document your wishes for the future.

Grief Begins Before Death

Grief does not always begin when someone dies.

Anticipatory grief can begin with a diagnosis, a change in someone's abilities, the realization that time may be limited, or even the first conversation about end-of-life care.

Family members and caregivers need support, too.

End-of-life doula care makes room for the experience of the person who is dying and for the people who love them.

There may be sadness and fear.

There may also be laughter, relief, tenderness, frustration, exhaustion, gratitude, ordinary conversation, and moments of unexpected beauty.

All of it belongs.
